How to Put In Clip-In Hair Extensions Without Showing the Clips

Clip-in extensions look more natural when the clips sit under enough of your own hair and the weft follows the shape of your head. Make a clean horizontal part, clip the upper hair out of the way, and attach the extension close to the roots without pulling. With a multi-piece set, add one weft at a time from the nape upward. With EWIGSC’s single spider-weft piece, use one section across the back, fasten the center clips first, then work outward.

The key is choosing a placement your natural hair can cover. If the clips show, feel bulky, or pull, remove the piece and reposition it rather than forcing it to stay.

A single wide weft is different from a full set

A multi-piece clip-in set usually has several separate wefts. You place each one on a separate section, then work upward and use smaller pieces near the sides.

EWIGSC’s 18-inch wavy synthetic spider-weft extension is one wide, removable piece with multiple clips across a spider-shaped base. It attaches without adhesive or sewing. Treat it as one piece: make one section across the back, secure the center first, and close the clips outward across the base. It is not a multi-piece set for building several rows over the whole head.

This difference matters. Full-set instructions that tell you to keep adding separate wefts do not apply to a single-piece extension. The shared basics are clean sectioning, secure clips, enough natural hair to cover the base, and a final mirror check.

What to prepare

Before you start, gather the extension, a tail comb, one or two sectioning clips, and a mirror. A second hand mirror helps you inspect the back.

Start with dry, detangled hair. Open the extension’s clips before placing it so you can position the base without tugging at your hair. EWIGSC recommends detangling this piece from the ends upward; the synthetic-wig detangling guide walks through that gentle, section-by-section method.

How to put in clip-in hair extensions

1. Decide where the weft can be covered

Look at the back of your head and choose a horizontal placement where the extension can sit flat and your own hair can fall over its top edge. Keep clips behind the visible hairline and temple edges, with enough hair above and around each clip to hide the base. For EWIGSC’s single wide spider-weft, use a section across the back rather than trying to place part of the base at the temples. Avoid placing a wide weft so high that a normal head turn exposes its edge.

If your hair is very short, sparse, or much shorter than the extension, the clips may be difficult to hide. Move the part lower, use fewer pieces from a multi-piece set, or choose an extension width and length that your own hair can cover. Do not force a wide base into a section that is too narrow.

2. Make a clean horizontal part

For a multi-piece set, start low at the nape. Use the tail of the comb to make a level part across the back, then clip the hair above it out of the way. The lower section should be wide enough for the first weft, with enough hair for its clips to catch.

For a single spider-weft piece, make one horizontal section across the back at the height where the base will sit. You do not need to create several rows for the same piece. Keep the upper layer clipped up so it can cover the base after attachment.

3. Attach the piece without pulling

Hold the weft against the part with its clips open. Let the base follow the curve of your head; do not stretch it straight across a curved section.

For EWIGSC’s spider-weft, start with the center clips and work outward across the base. Close each clip over a manageable section of your natural hair. The clips should feel secure, but the piece should not pinch or pull. If a clip will not close, remove a little hair from beneath it and try again; if it slides, reposition it where the section gives the clip a better hold.

With a multi-piece set, attach the lowest weft first, then release another horizontal section above it and add the next piece. Choose a weft that fits each section instead of forcing one that is too wide. Leave enough of your own hair above the top row to cover it.

4. Release your hair and blend

Let the clipped-up layer fall over the top of the extension. Use your fingers to blend the roots and lengths. A wide-tooth comb can help, but start gently and avoid pulling across the clips.

EWIGSC’s piece has an 18-inch soft wave. It will blend most easily when your own hair has a compatible length and texture. If your hair ends much higher than the extension, the change in length may remain visible even when the clips are hidden. A single piece can add body and length through the back, but it does not create the same coverage as several separately placed wefts.

For this synthetic extension, EWIGSC does not recommend curling irons, flat irons, or hot blow-drying. Use your fingers to arrange the wave. For a broader explanation of shaping standard synthetic hair without hot tools, see How to Style a Synthetic Wig Without Damaging It; this extension’s product-specific heat limits still apply.

5. Check the back, sides, and comfort

Use a second mirror to inspect the back, then turn your head and lift your arms as you normally would. Check that the clips remain covered and that the weft lies flat. If you plan to wear a ponytail or half-up style, make that style now and inspect again around the crown, above the ears, and at the back; pulling hair up changes which sections cover the extension.

EWIGSC’s spider-weft is one wide piece designed to sit across the back. Its product listing describes the curved ends as suitable for loose styles and fuller ponytails, but a higher ponytail may expose the base if your own hair cannot cover its edges. If that happens, lower the ponytail or leave more of your hair down.

Take the extension out if it hurts, pinches, or keeps slipping. Reposition it on a section that can hold it securely; do not keep tightening the clips against your scalp. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that repeated pulling from extensions can damage hair and contribute to traction alopecia. A clip-in should feel secure, not painful.

If the clips show or slide

What you notice What to change
A clip is visible from the back Lower the part or leave a thicker top layer to cover the base.
An edge shows when you make a ponytail Lower the ponytail or leave more cover hair down. Keep the wide spider-weft across the back.
The weft looks raised or bulky Remove it and reset the part. Check that excess hair is not folded beneath the base.
A clip slides when you move Reopen it and place it where enough natural hair can hold it. Do not clip onto a tiny, fragile section.
The extension looks like a separate shelf of hair Check the length and texture difference. A single long wave may not blend into much shorter hair by placement alone.
Your scalp feels sore or pinched Remove the extension. Do not keep wearing it while it hurts or pulls.

How to remove clip-in extensions

Release each clip before moving the weft away from your head. Support the base with one hand and open the clips one at a time; do not pull the piece out while a clip is still closed. For a multi-piece set, remove each row separately. Once the extension is out, gently detangle your own hair before brushing or combing it. Before reusing a piece with worn ends or unreliable clips, our extension lifespan and replacement guide explains when care, fastening repair or replacement is appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear clip-in extensions with short hair?

Sometimes. Your own hair needs to cover the top edge and clips, and the added length still needs to blend with your ends. If the clips stay visible or the extension looks like a separate shelf of hair, try a lower placement or a shorter, narrower piece. EWIGSC’s spider-weft is one wide piece with 18-inch hair; that measurement describes the hair length, not the width of its base. It may not blend well when your natural hair is much shorter.

Is EWIGSC’s spider-weft a full set of clip-in extensions?

No. It is one wide synthetic piece with 18-inch hair and multiple clips across a spider-shaped base. Place it as one piece across the back, starting with the center clips and working outward. A multi-piece set is installed in separate rows.

Do clip-in extensions work with fine hair?

They can when the clips hold securely and your own hair covers the base without pulling. If the clips show or the section feels strained, remove the piece and try a different placement. With a multi-piece set, use fewer or narrower wefts; a single wide piece may not suit hair that cannot comfortably support or conceal its base.

Do you have to tease your roots before putting in clip-in extensions?

No. Start with dry, detangled hair and try the clips without backcombing. If they slide, reposition them over a section that can hold them securely. Teasing is an optional grip technique in some multi-piece tutorials, but EWIGSC’s spider-weft instructions do not require it.

Can EWIGSC’s synthetic extension be curled with a curling iron?

EWIGSC does not recommend curling irons, flat irons, or hot blow-drying for this product. It is made from synthetic fiber and has a soft wave; use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to arrange it.

Can I wear EWIGSC’s spider-weft in a high ponytail?

The product listing describes the curved ends as suitable for fuller ponytails. A high ponytail can still expose the base if your own hair does not cover its top or side edges. Attach the wide piece across the back, make the ponytail at the height you plan to wear, and check it with a second mirror. If a clip shows, lower the ponytail or leave more hair down to cover the base.

Choose the right placement before adding more hair

For a multi-piece set, work in separate rows and match each weft to the width of its section. For EWIGSC’s one-piece spider-weft, one well-placed section across the back is the starting point. In either case, the clips should lie flat, stay covered, and feel comfortable before you leave the mirror.
