Hair extensions can last for several months, but the useful life of the hair is different from how long one installation stays in place. For EWIGSC's 18-inch synthetic clip-in extension, expect about 6 to 12 months with proper care, or about 3 to 6 months with daily wear. Remove it after each wear and use it again while the hair remains manageable and the base and clips stay secure.
Salon-fitted extensions follow a different schedule. Tape-ins and beaded wefts need periodic removal or repositioning as your hair grows, even when the extension hair is still usable. The material, attachment method and frequency of wear all matter when planning maintenance or replacement.
How long do different hair extensions last?
Use the examples below to distinguish the time between fittings from the life of the purchased hair. Each numerical range belongs to the named brand and product type.
| Extension type | Time in your hair | Usable life or replacement guidance |
|---|---|---|
| EWIGSC synthetic clip-in | Remove after each wear. | About 6 to 12 months with proper care; about 3 to 6 months with daily wear. |
| Remy human hair clip-ins | Remove daily. | Cliphair gives about 3 to 6 months for daily or near-daily use, potentially up to 12 months with occasional use. |
| Tape-ins | Great Lengths Canada recommends removing its GL Tapes every 6 to 8 weeks. | The same hair can be reused after removal if its condition allows. A refit does not automatically mean buying new hair. |
| Beaded wefts | BELLAMI recommends move-up appointments every 4 to 6 weeks for its beaded wefts. | BELLAMI gives 6 to 12 months for its weft hair with proper care and maintenance. |
| Keratin bonds | BELLAMI K-Tips remain installed for 3 to 6 months with proper care. | BELLAMI recommends new K-Tip hair after removal rather than reusing or re-tipping it. |

These ranges are useful for budgeting, but they compare different products and wearing routines. Similar month ranges do not establish that synthetic and human hair will perform identically. For fitted methods, follow the maintenance schedule for your installation even if the lengths still look good.
What to expect from EWIGSC's synthetic clip-in extension
The 6-to-12-month expectation applies to our 18-inch wavy synthetic spider-weft extension when it is cared for properly. If you wear the same piece every day, plan around the shorter 3-to-6-month period. These are expected use periods; the condition of the hair and fastening determines when an individual piece needs replacement.
This is one wide, removable piece with multiple clips across a spider-shaped base. It adds length and body through the back without adhesive or sewing. Because you take it out between wears, you can detangle and store it separately instead of exposing it to sleep, showering and continuous wear.
Daily use brings more contact with clothing, more handling and more opportunities for tangling. Occasional wear puts less use on the same piece, although rough handling or heat damage can still shorten its life. The calendar alone does not show how much wear the fibers have received.
For example, an extension worn for a few events and one worn throughout every working week can be the same age but in very different condition. Inspect the ends, the underside of the lengths and the base before deciding that either has reached the end of its life.
Does taking clip-ins out mean they only last one day?
No. Clip-ins are temporary attachments that can be worn repeatedly. Taking them out ends that wearing session; it does not use up the hairpiece.
Open every clip fully before lifting the base away. Pulling the extension out while a clip is closed catches your own hair and strains the attachment. After removal, support the base and gently separate tangles before storage. The clip-in installation and removal guide shows how to position and release our single wide piece.
A salon method described as lasting several weeks stays attached between appointments. A removable clip-in described as lasting several months is reused over that period. Those descriptions answer different questions.
When do hair extensions need care, repair or replacement?
Assess the hair and its fastening separately. A piece that slips may need a different placement, while one that stays secure can still have worn-out ends.
Start with manageable tangles and buildup
A few loose knots after wear do not mean the extension needs replacing. Hold the hair above the tangle, separate it gently with your fingers, and work upward from the ends with a wide-tooth comb. Stop if the fibers resist rather than dragging through the knot.
If the lengths feel coated or have a stale odor, clean the piece with a product intended for synthetic hair, following its care directions. Let it dry completely before judging the result. Buildup and permanent fiber damage can both make hair feel rough; the difference becomes clearer after appropriate cleaning and gentle detangling.
Check what happens after normal care
Persistent matting, fused sections or ends that remain visibly frayed are reasons to replace a piece for regular wear. More forceful brushing will not restore fused fibers. Repeatedly combing resistant tangles can also leave the lengths thinner and less even.
Look at the extension beneath your own hair as well as on its own. If the ends no longer blend, or the piece has lost so much fullness that it no longer gives the result you bought it for, replacement may make more sense than further attempts to reset the style.
Inspect the clips and their attachment to the base

If the piece slides, remove it and test whether each clip opens and closes properly. Check that the base sits flat and that the clips catch enough natural hair. A sound clip in the wrong position can slip even when the extension is new.
A clip that will not stay shut, loose stitching around a fastening or a torn base is a different problem. Stop using the affected attachment. If the hair is still in good condition, have the fastening assessed for repair; if the base is torn across several attachments, replace the piece. Never compensate for a faulty fastening by clipping onto a smaller, tighter section of hair.
Remove the extension if it pinches, pulls or feels painful, regardless of its age.
Care habits that help a synthetic clip-in last
For EWIGSC's wavy extension, preserve the existing shape with gentle handling. Curling irons, flat irons and hot blow-drying are not recommended for this product. Air-dry it away from direct heat and arrange the wave with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
After each wear, release all the clips, detangle from the ends upward and store the dry piece where the lengths will not be crushed or caught on other items. Support the base while handling it so the weight of the hair does not pull against a clip or seam.
Wash when sweat, odor or buildup calls for it rather than automatically after every short wear. Use cool water and suitable synthetic-hair care products; avoid rubbing, twisting or wringing the lengths. HairUWear's synthetic-hair care guidance also emphasizes gentle detangling and pressing out water without wringing.
Keep the piece out of bed, the shower and the pool. Removing it before these activities limits avoidable tangling and makes it easier to preserve its shape between wears. A heat protectant does not turn this extension into a product suitable for hot tools.
Questions about extension lifespan
Does time in storage count the same as time spent wearing extensions?
No. A piece stored dry and protected from tangling does not receive the same friction and handling as one worn regularly. Before reusing an older piece, inspect its fibers, base and clips. Time in a drawer alone cannot tell you whether it is ready to wear.
Will rotating two clip-ins make each one last twice as long?
Rotation spreads your wearing sessions across two pieces, so each receives less use. It does not establish a fixed doubling of calendar life. Care, storage and accidental damage still affect each piece separately.
Should I choose the extension with the longest advertised lifespan?
Choose a method that suits how you want to wear it. A removable piece suits occasional length and volume without keeping an attachment in overnight. Fitted methods involve installation and maintenance appointments. When comparing costs, include those services as well as the price of the hair; a longer advertised life does not describe the whole commitment.
Plan replacement around your routine and the piece's condition
For our synthetic clip-in, budget for about 6 to 12 months with proper care, or about 3 to 6 months if you wear it daily. Keep using it while the lengths remain manageable and the base and clips are reliable. Treat recurring buildup, placement problems and permanent damage as different issues so you can choose the appropriate next step.
