For a wig you wear several times a week, a lightweight open wig stand is the easiest place to leave it between wears. If you are putting it away for longer, let it dry completely, then use a loose protective net if you have one and a storage box deep enough that the lid does not press on the hair. No stand? A roomy box or clean, deep drawer is a workable choice. The rule is simple: keep the cap dry, the shape uncrushed, and the wig away from heat and direct sun.
EWIGSC’s wig collection is made from synthetic fiber. The dry, low-pressure storage steps below help protect its set style between wears. Human-hair wigs can need different care, so follow the instructions for that fiber.
First, check the wig before it goes anywhere
Take it off and feel the inside of the cap, especially at the front and nape. If it feels damp from washing or wear, leave it on an open stand until both the cap and hair are fully dry. A box or bag closes off airflow at exactly the wrong moment. Close any clips or adjustable fastenings so they cannot catch in the fibers, and remove hairpins that could leave a dent.
You do not need to wash a wig after every wear just to store it. If it actually needs cleaning, use our separate wig-washing guide, then return to storage once it is dry. For a few snags, gently free those before packing rather than forcing the hair flat; the synthetic-wig detangling guide covers that step.
Stand, box, or bag: which should you use?
| Where it goes | Use it when | Check before you leave it |
|---|---|---|
| Open wig stand | You will wear the wig again soon, or the cap is still drying. | The cap rests lightly on the stand; the ends hang free and do not brush a shelf. |
| Roomy box or deep drawer | You are rotating to another wig or putting this one away for a while. | Everything is dry. A lid or closed drawer clears the bangs, crown, curls, and ends without pressure. |
| Roomy soft bag | You need compact travel storage and cannot bring a box. | The wig is dry, has its own space, and is loosely netted if a net is available; the cap is not sharply folded. |
A stand is convenient, not compulsory. HairUWear's synthetic-wig care instructions recommend a wig stand for storage and air drying to avoid unwanted kinks. For a shaped wave, a box can be the better answer: Jon Renau advises netting and boxing its wavy styles because leaving them on a stand can relax their shape over time. Those are makers' instructions for their own wigs, not guarantees about every EWIGSC style. Together, they explain why the right support depends on the hair shape and how long it will sit.
Using a stand without distorting the cap
Set the stand on a level, dry surface. Lower the cap onto its rounded top and let the hair fall around the outside. Do not pull the cap down tightly or pin it through a lace area. If a rigid display head feels larger than the wig's cap, choose a smaller open stand or switch to a box; the cap should rest, not stretch. Leave space around the ends so they do not curl against a wall or fold under on a shelf.
This is especially handy for a smooth shape such as EWIGSC's 8-inch blunt straight bob. Its defined edge is easier to check when the ends hang free. An open stand also gives a recently washed wig airflow while it dries; once dry, you can move it to a box if you need the shelf space.
How to put a wig in a box
- Choose a clean, roomy storage box. The product packaging is suitable only if it leaves enough room for the whole style; if hair touches the lid, use a deeper box.
- If you have a protective hair net, slip it loosely over the style. It should contain the fibers, not flatten the crown or pull the curls tight.
- Lay the wig down in its natural shape. Support the cap with a little clean tissue if it would collapse, but do not stuff the hair or bend the front edge sharply.
- Close the lid and lift it again. If the fringe, curls, or ends have been pressed, rearrange the wig or use a larger box.
For the loose bends on EWIGSC's 9-inch curly bob, that last check matters more than fitting the wig into the smallest container. Use your fingers to settle the curls; brushing them flat for storage works against the style. A longer, straight piece such as the 13-inch lob needs room for its ends to lie in a gentle curve rather than a tight fold.
A deep, clean drawer can serve the same purpose if it closes without touching the wig. Keep other items out of that space so they cannot press against the hair.

Where to keep it at home
Choose a cool, dry closet shelf or drawer out of direct sunlight. Keep the wig away from heaters and steamy bathrooms. A stand on an open shelf is fine if it will not be knocked over; a box is better when the shelf is dusty or shared with things that might press into the hair. Do not stack heavy items on a wig box. If several wigs share a shelf, give each one its own stand or box so fibers and clips cannot catch on a neighbor.
For travel, a soft bag is a space-saving compromise, not the best place to leave a styled wig under a packed suitcase. Let the wig dry, add a loose protective net if you have one, place it at the top of your luggage, and take it out when you arrive. If the cap or ends emerge folded, let the wig rest in its natural shape before putting it on.
Two quick questions before you close the closet
Can I store a wig in a plastic bag?
Only after it is completely dry, and only if the bag has room for the style without crushing it. A small sealed bag is a poor choice for a damp cap or a shaped bob. For longer storage, choose a roomy box or a clean drawer instead.
Do I need a mannequin head to store a wig?
No. A light open stand works for frequent wear, and a roomy box or deep drawer works when you have no stand at all. A head form is useful only if it supports the cap without stretching it and leaves the hair free of pressure.
Before the next wear, lift the wig out, check that the cap is dry and the ends have not taken a fold, then settle the style with your fingers. Storage should make the next morning easier, not create a new styling job.
